a few reminders...
here is what our house used to look like. i thought it would help explain what we have been doing the past several months. the picture above is taken from my kitchen sink. the room i am looking into is our family room. it had a two-story ceiling, but only over about 3/4ths of the room. the asymmetry always bugged us, as did the noise, the lack of coziness and the misuse of potential space. so we floored it over. we also added some trim work and reconfigured the kitchen a bit. i am still busy tweaking some things, especially in the kitchen, you know the small details are very important :) but i can show you the new family room even though it hasn't been properly adorned yet...
and maybe you noticed, but that light fixture is hanging from the ceiling, yes a ceiling! whoop whoop!! we love having a ceiling!

Very impressive! Love everything!
Breaking out of lurk to say, Gorgeous! Really like the wainscoting and in general a wonderful change. Gratz!
Delurking to say: gorgeous! I like it much better this way, and the wainscot is beautiful and has a nice farmhouse-y feel. Always inspired, as you seem to get so much done... Enjoy!
Just gorgeous! I'm not a huge fan of 2 story rooms. They seem impossible to cozy up. You really did that room justice. Love it!
Wow, everything looks absolutely breathtaking! Love the wood work!!!
That IS gorgeous! I always wondered why builders did those strange two-story ceilings... we have friends with them and I always thought it was wasted space. Your room is so beautiful and balanced now. I love the architectural details over the fireplace. I had designers recommend that to us too. And the wood floors... nothing is better! Great job Beth!
I love it! Can't wait to see the rest! Please share with us when you get a chance. Also, what color blue is that? It's so perfectly you!
Beautiful! We built our first home in Nashville, and chose the only floorplan of about 10 that did not have a 2-story family room. I'm so with you! Love the cozy feeling of a lower ceiling.
All of your details are divine! You will love pulling it all together!
Just beautiful and even better in person!
I have a friend who just did this and added a fifth bedroom in the space. Is your new space for storage or another room? I love the chandelier. The room looks GREAT!!!
WOW!!!!! That is so gorgeous! I can't believe how beautiful that is! More, more, more pictures...please!! :o)
lo-oooooooooooove it!
show more soon. (you really are potentially evil by waiting this long.)
blessings!
What a great idea! I would of never thought! I just LOVE the new room! I cant wait to see lots more pix! Julie
We had at the same assymetrical ceiling issue in our living room, and we lowered it a bit, which helped. But I really love what you did. It looks beautiful!
Simply beautiful, can't wait so see the kitchen. You have very good taste!
So beautiful it's certain to launch a thousand imitations across blogland. So happy for you, homedaisy!!
Holy crud! that is draw dropping gorgeous. I can't believe the change. You must be thrilled...even though all the work isn't done. I love it so much! Seriously love it!
wow! love the transformation...you have amazing vision!
ooooh...I just found you via Mabel's House. Wondeful blog!! Lots of great decor inspiration.
still looking at it and loving it. even though i've seen it now, probably twelve times. questions:
1. is the chandelier and hardware on your sconces silver?
2. are the wood floors the same?
3. what color paint did you use and brand?
4. did you have an actual picture to show someone for the room and mantel design or was it all in your mind.
i seriously would love to know as i'm sure would others.
i'm putting in a bid to hubby to come and visit this fall...we'll see.
bless you!
Wow! I love the new space! I love the wainscot, the shade of blue, the fireplace...just the look of it all together! Very calm and cozy. And, I am envious of your wood picture box. I've been eyeing them for months! I'm dying to have one for our bedroom with a wedding photo in it.
Can't wait to see more pictures, and of course, the kitchen! Thanks for sharing. :)
Your renovation is looking wonderful, I can't wait to see what you have done with the rest of it.
Cheers Linda
How exciting! Your room looks gorgeous. I too can't stand our two story ceilings, all that open space is unnerving. I have never even thought of doing what you have done here nor have I ever seen it done. What a great idea........I'm full of creative energy right now. Like I said above so exciting ~
Hi, sorry, me again. Did you put in new windows? We have floor to ceiling windows that would be a problem.
What a beautiful space!
My word. How fantastic. I'm glad I'm not the only person who doesnt like huge vaulted ceilings! The white wood work on the walls is beautiful, just beautiful.
This is gorgeous! How creative you are. I can't wait for more photo's!
I love your over mantle and beadboard - it looks great! That's exactly what I've had planned for our fireplace and livingroom- I hope ours turns out half as beautiful. Great job!
Beautiful!
Love it!
It looks BEAUTIFUL!!!! I do not like double story living rooms at all. We built our new old house a few years ago and the builder wanted a 2 story living room or entry but I think they are not warm and welcoming at all.

I love your farmhouse so much and it is wonderful to see all of the beautiful remodeling and decorating you are doing. You definitely have an eye for design and color. I love how cozy you are making your home. I can really appreciate it as my first adult home was an old farmhouse that we slowly fixed up over five years and sadly just when it was my dream home, we had to sell it and move out of state. I sure do miss it, but your blog has me dreaming again.
Two words: stunningly beautiful! Your style is right up my alley...I am drooling!!
Linda
