i won't grow up
i play bunco. i play with a group of women in my neighborhood. we take turns hosting out of our homes. two weeks ago, i went to a beautiful home and while i was sitting at the kitchen table i started laughing out loud as i looked around. i turned to the lady next to me and i said, "sometimes, when i go to other people's homes, i feel like a little kid." let me explain. the hostess and i are about the same age. her home is amazing and grand and castle-like. her husband is a builder and they use their home as a showcase in many respects. it is stone and brick and her front door weighs more than a small car. her kitchen island is about thirty feet long. there is dark wood and granite and gorgeous heavy draperies. all of the chairs are oversized and the dining room table is so slick and polished that when i set my coaster down, it went flying across the table like an air hockey puck. i appreciated the beauty of this fine home, the builder really does nice work, but i felt very small in it. and i got the giggles when i thought about what i wanted for my birthday to put in my butler's pantry:

what will the bunco ladies think when i tell them i buy things to decorate my home at pottery barn teen?

I know! I just saw the PB teen book for the first time and I loved everything in it! My teenager was like OK Mom.... it says TEEN. I don't care! Love it all.

I am glad I am not the only one who feels that way. I used to play Bunco too (we recently disbanded *sniff*) and I always felt like my home was the odd man out. But I decorate it for me and not people who visit it once a year! :) And that pink phone is adorable, does it come in red?

you make me laugh! i too have seen things in the pb teen catalog that i have wanted to use in my home. for those of us who love to "putter" in our homes on a daily basis, inspiration can come from the most unexpected places. that phone is saying, "yeah, i'm a phone, but i don't take myself too seriously!"

I think they will say you have FABULOUS taste! Now, I just need to think of a place I need to have that pink phone!! :)

oh, I bet they will be a little envious that you have the courage to add fun things like this without a second thought. It can't be as much fun to have everything just so and perfect. It just can't!

who cares what the Bunco ladies think??! they probably think you are more creative than they are...i'd bet my money on it!

I would take cute and cozy over grand and castle-like any day of the week. I love to tour large beautiful homes but I still prefer to come home to my little cottage style home. Love the pink phone!!!

Too funny! I don't know how people can call such grand homes "home." They are quite lovely but they are so formal and uncomfortable!

I agree with Gardengirl. I would take cute and cozy any day over grand. Which is a good thing considering I have a small cottage!

Thanks for visiting me. We remodeled our kitchen about 2 years ago. I have never regretted taking out the upper cabinets. I have an antique cabinet where I store my china. I will try to post some pictures next week. BTW, where in Maryland did you grow up?

You have such a lovely blog, and I look forward to visiting when I have more time.

Promise me you'll buy it! I've seen the children's Pottery
Barn catalogue and things I would buy for myself. I didn't know there was a TEEN version. I'm going to google for it this minute.

I am so with you on that phone! I've been coveting it and thinking I'd get it for my 6 year old as an excuse to have it for myself. But now you inspire me to be honest and say "I want it!".

I completly understand. I wouldn't know what to do with such a house. I would have to hire someone to decorate it. My discount finds probably wouldn't go too well. :)

Hey, PB Teen is amazing!
I know the feeling all too well!

But the ladies will all jjst be so amazed at how delightful your home is...how lucky they are to get to BE there!

That phone is to die for! I have a red one that came from Renovators Hardware. But to have one that looks like a pay phone...AND pink? Waaaay cool.

I get woozy over doors and stuff too. How is your fundraising going?? *grin*

Hugs,
Sue

LOL! I love that phone! I'm sure their home is lovely, but I KNOW it wouldn't give me the same feelings I get when I see your home. Yours is truly special.
