husbands just don't understand

i was in a grumpy mood this morning. i have had a yucky cold all weekend and i guess i was just sick of being couped up. because after i decided to run a few errands, my spirits lifted. which is kind of the opposite of the normal me. as the often shy, introverted type, i usually enjoy being couped up. but not today. i spent a few hours hitting some spots around town and ended up at the grocery store. i chatted with everyone who came into three feet of me, which is also very abnormal of me, and i got more groceries than i usually get. i was having a high time, whistling in the aisles and buying new items even if they were not on sale, including this new detergent. i was so tickled that the colors on the bottle match my laundry room decor! as soon as i got home, i plopped it on top of our washer. it looked so great! and it says it smells lemon fresh - bonus! but not three minutes passed...

husband: do you have the receipt from the grocery store?
bethy: yes. why?
husband: because the detergent you just bought doesn't work with our machine.
bethy: are you sure?
husband: yes. it has to be h/e. so it has to go back.
bethy: but look how good the bottle looks in our laundry room.
husband: (raises eyebrow)
bethy: i know, i will pour the stuff in the ugly bright orange bottle into the pretty new bottle, then we can donate the detergent from the bottle we can't use to someone in need.
husband: no, that's weird.
bethy: come on!
husband: no.

that is when i got the old dj jazzy jeff song in my head.
husbands just don't understand.

so i said: yo homes, smell ya later.

I am laughing out loud!!!! And I am thinking that the P&G product designer is a man also because WHO would design that ugly orange detergent bottle anyways??? Not a woman (with good taste!). I am in your same boat--h/e washer...drats.

So funny! I totally understand wanting your laundry detergent tub to match your laundry room, I mean, that's obvious;o)

So funny! My husband doesn't know where our laundry room is, and we've lived in our house for 15 years- lol. Love your sweet blog and beautifully decorated house- love your style!

Too funny! I oftentimes find myself buying products simply for the packaging or the "idea" of them. When you said your husband just shakes his head...sounds just like mine! :o) Glad I am not the only one... I adore visiting your blog...especially to look at your screened-in porch & daydream! hehe!

Okay I must be completely out of the loop...what's an h/e machine? Unfortunately my washer and dryer sit in the icky garage with all of the icky husband cluttery garagey junk! I would otherwise without a pause pour it in that matching bottle ;)

Hugs,
Dena

Ok. I have had a really rotten day. On the way to taking my kids to school the car broke down. I am now sitting here waiting to find out what it will cost to fix the car....right before Christmas. This was a really good laugh that I needed !!! Thanks so much. :)

You make me laugh! That is sooo something I would do...and then rationalize just as you did...after all, it's for charity...

I just got caught up on your posts. I love the one about the colour dilemma. I was having a crisis of sorts myself last week, but I think I've sorted it out...

cute story! I agree; sometimes husbands just don't understand about these sorts of things.

bethy- i was feeling sorta guilty-you know, all rubbin' it in about the HE machines so i decided to come back again and fill you in one another yummy treat for you home.
you may already be in the loop , but if not, you must try restoration hardware's home cleaning line. shore, white fig, and meyer lemon are my favs. i have used the shore cleaning spray and vaccum beads and they are wondeful & i'm waaaaaaaaaaaay picky on home fragrance...
there, now i don't feel so bad.

Have you looked at the Christmas ornaments at Restoration Hardware? They have some in your color scheme...

You're right the bottle is much prettier. Check your machine instructions. I have a new front loading machine that is supposed to take H/E detergent...but the manual says you can use regular strength if you just use one half the usual amount. Sounds to me like the detergent manufacturers are making a killing by diluting and selling it to us. I've been using the regular at half the amount for the year we've had our washer...everything comes out nice and clean and so far no problems (knock on wood!).

Wow..that's funny I just bought that detergent on Sunday, partly because I had a coupon but I picked it over the orange bottle..even though my dryer sits in the hidious garage..but what the heck is a h/e machine..we need a knew washer AND dryer in the next couple of months...so I need to know. Love your blog....I check in daily..

I think your request to at least use the pretty one was totally logical. Ok, maybe not logical, but it makes sense to me. :)

HAHAHA!! My husband and I spent practically a half hour looking for that stupid HE detergent the other day and the grocer. I too wanted to "pretty kind". Huh, men just don't get it:)

That is hilarious. I can see your point completely - the nicely colored bottle looked so good in your laundry room. But hey, I am pretty impressed that your husband knew this about the type of detergent needed for your washing machine. My husband would have zero clue...

SO FUNNY!

Too funny, and so true, sometimes there are things that don't make sense exactly to husbands, but make perfect sense to us. I actually know women like that too, which is always a bit awkward. Too bad about the bottle, but maybe you can find a pretty glass bottle, like big glass milk bottles for the detergent? I think that would be very nice.
