have you ever seen miracle on 34th street? the real one with natalie wood? it is my very favorite movie ever. the best scene is when this adopted dutch girl goes to sit on santa's lap. she thinks he won't be able to speak to her, but he surprises her by not only speaking dutch, but also by singing this song with her:
"Sinterklaas kapoentje,
gooi wat in mijn schoentje,
gooi wat in mijn laarsje,
dank u, Sinterklaasje."
i used to rewind the tape to hear that song over and over again until i had it memorized. well, today is the day to sing that song! today is
st. nicholas day! it is the day that dutch children leave their wooden shoes out to be filled with candy. we celebrate this holiday here at my house, maybe because it is another special day for us, it's the day my husband and i were married - nine years ago :).

Funny, I just saw that movie for the first time last night on TCM. I have seen the end a million times but never the whole thing. Anyway, Happy Anniversary!

I just found your blog yesterday and have thoroughly enjoyed looking at your beautiful home.
What sweet wooden shoes. I have a pin given to me when I was a small child by my great aunt that has small wooden shoes on them...the shoes reminded me of the pin.
Happy Anniversary!
Love this i. I have a good friend who is from Holland, in fact her daughter's name is Holland, wonder why she doesn't take part in such a lovely tradition? Happy Anniversary! Happy St. Nicholas Day!

hi, I just saw that Williams Sonoma now has children's aprons in "vintage" prints. I'm not sure if you are still looking, but I thought I'd pass this on just in case. I found them when I was looking at their site online.
Happy Anniversary!
I just recently found your blog and am enjoying your pictures and paint adventures. I read through the archives, as well. I am also a former teacher. I decided to stay home with my boys when my first son was born two years ago. I miss teaching but like you, would love to open my own business one day.
Just checking to make sure you're not sick. I miss seeing what you're up to. :o)
