oprah

her show called me once. can you believe that? it was back in 2004. i remember it so clearly. it was around six o'clock on a monday night. i was bathing my then two and three year old children. i let the machine get it as i always do at that hour, and my husband called out asking if i was hearing the voice on the recording. of course, it wasn't opes herself, but it was one of her producers. i came into our bedroom and caught the end of the message, not completely understanding what was going on. i replayed the message as soon as i could, sending my husband in to finish up with the kids. i remember shrieking as i heard that the oprah show was interested in having ME come to talk about my distressed furniture techniques. i had emailed the show - you know that page on her site that is looking for people to be on the program? they had asked if you had a passion for making things from trash to treasure - and, uh, YES, i did! i had written a fine little note about how i had been doing that very thing and, voila, they called me. for a week following the producer and i corresponded with each other. i sent him pictures, he asked for a demonstration video, i complied. he kept me in the loop for a bit...and then....nothing. a few days passed and i got an email thanking me for everything but, "the show had been redirected." they decided to go with the big shots instead of the everyday folks and they had rachel ashwell on the the show. well, duh, i could have told them she would have been better than me. so why did they go and get my hopes up like that? i am still recovering. seriously.

What an honor that you were considered...... wish they would have chosen you, and then I could be like "Oh, I know her." ;)
I'm having a tea party on my blog today; stop on over and perhaps that will lift your spirits! I'm almost as fun as Oprah!!
:)

Someday they may call you again... Rachel Ashwell is so yesterday. (okay, not really, but in Oprah world she is.) Many of us have never even received an "O" call! I tried to get her to call an artist shop in Michigan that's been there forever (her neck of the woods) and they never heard from them. So feel very fortunate that they were interested!

I had some aunts who graced the Oprah stage back in the mid 90's. I only wish it had been an honor. One of them ended up being disowned and the whole thing was an embarassing circus. I have fun telling the story though. My mom and her sister were on the Oprah show..."Poor white Trash".

Oh no... I would have been so sad! I think it's great that they contacted you though, how cool is that!

I also have a passion for refinishing vintage what-nots I find that need a little rescue. I just finished up an amazing dresser for my little ones.

Your blog is so great. I'll be back for sure!

How exciting to even have been considered to be on Oprah! Sorry they didn't follow through. Congrats on the potential invite any way, you would have made a great segment for them. Their loss.

Wow Beth, that is so cool! The best would have been if you AND Rachel were on together and you could've met her. I think you would have been fabulous on Oprah!

That sucks! I'm sure you would have been great. The sort of same thing happened to me. I was going to be a call in guest on one of her XM shows. Corresponded back and forth and then nothin!

Sometimes you hear stories about people who submitted their work for one show, didn't make it on, but then they are called back for something else...something even better. Maybe that's the case with you, homedaisy. I'd love to see you up there on that stage, giving Oprah and her pal Nate some tips!

First of all...love that phone. Second....how cool would that have been if you'd had been on Oprah. They missed out on your great talent.

oh, i'm so sorry! that exact thing happened to me with the Rachael Ray show! i even sent all this stationery and samples for the staff and the guests on the show and the taping ran over. guess who got cut? yours truly. :( but i was honored that they would consider me. and the guests were a military family whose husband/father was in Iraq, so i was glad to be able to give something back to them.

maybe we'll get our big talk show break someday!

Will you give us a mini-lesson on distressing furniture? I want to distress a few pieces, but am not sure what to do. Specifically, do I need to put a glaze over the furniture once I distress it?

Too bad for Oprah....she missed out but what about the martha show??? I need some lessons on distressed furniture techniques and would love to see you on the show.

Okay, so I have the same phone in red! Cool huh? No? Okay, but I do! *grin*

Now, the way I figure it, you are heads and tails ahead of all of us! We have never even been considered by the Oprah show. AND it was O herself that lost out. Or, it was all of US who lost out...I am thinking awe should begin a letter writing campaign.

Rachel who?? Bethy that is who!

Hope school is going well!

LOVE the photos below! Too sweet.

Hugs,
Sue

Oh my goodness! Your story reminds me of the time Christopher Lowell's show called my daughter after she sent him some pictures of her painted furniture. They told her they would use them on the show and then a few months later...they wrote to say they wouldn't be using her pictures after all. She is still mad at Christopher Lowell! LOL!

that is so exciting! I was an Oprah addict. When I was a guest instructor at a spa in Mexico, I met a woman who worked for her. I about died! The poor woman was probably SO sick of my questions.
